Meet the team behind the Hycon Homes

Built by hand. Backed by heart. Driven by purpose.

David & Nicole Hynes

Nicole and David Hynes never set out to be revolutionaries in the building industry. They were just a young couple with a builder’s instinct, a teacher’s heart, and a knack for saying yes to big, messy, meaningful adventures. Over the years, they became masters of the classic fixer-upper, raising their four kids in a string of cold, draughty, hard to heat homes while dreaming of a better way to live.

That dream turned practical the day David, then a Building and Construction teacher, took his students on an excursion to explore innovative building materials. That’s when he stumbled upon Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS), a building method that had long taken hold in Europe but was virtually unknown in Australia. To David, who had spent 30 years on tools and in the classroom, it was like glimpsing the future, finally a way to build homes that were warm, efficient, and built to last.

Back at home, Nicole was equally driven. With 20 years in teaching and 10 years running small businesses, she had a natural curiosity for doing things better and an unstoppable energy for turning ideas into systems. Together, they built a small SIPS bungalow in their backyard, and that was it. They were hooked.

That spark became Hycon Homes, a building company with a bold mission to make high-performance housing, not just premium or luxury, but normal, in Australia.

Nicole and David now live on five acres out of town with their free-range kids (now grown), chooks, cattle, and a pig named Peggy. They grow their own food, chase the sunrise, and still say yes to wild ideas, like packing the family into a caravan and moving to Darwin just to see what life had to offer.

Community is the heartbeat of their life and work. David is the president of the local cricket club, a footy goal umpire, and the first to throw on a high-vis vest when something needs doing. Nicole is the president of the local hall, the ocean dip organiser, and the woman every committee quietly relies on. Their weekends are a blur of sport, camping, shared meals, and last-minute projects, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

At Hycon, they’ve built more than a business. They’ve built a team of people they genuinely like being around. People who work hard, think smart, and share a laugh, because building is tough, and you might as well enjoy the people you’re in the trenches with.

They believe homes should work for people, not the other way around. That good building isn't just about looks, it’s about comfort, performance, and building something that lasts. It’s about creating spaces where families can thrive, age with grace, and live lightly on the earth.

At its core, Hycon Homes is a family story and a quiet revolution in how we build.

“We believe a great build isn’t just about how it looks; it’s about creating spaces that grow with you, are built to last, and offer real value  all while keeping your budget in mind.”
